According to TSMC’s latest sustainability report, in 2025, 2,331 newborns were welcomed to the Taiwan plant and Caiyu employees, accounting for 2.2% of all newborns in Taiwan. The fertility rate of TSMC employees is about twice that of Taiwan. TSMC’s high fertility rate is thought to be associated with higher salaries at the company. The median salary of TSMC employees is NT $3 million, with an average of NT $4 million, which is four times more than the entire salary of Taiwan. Studies show that income and fertility have a U-shaped curve, and when poverty enters the well-off stage, fertility willingness declines, but after becoming well-off, fertility willingness begins to increase again. This is because the cost of childbearing will increase with economic development. Wages and house prices make most young people afraid to give birth, but richer people can afford the cost of childbearing, so they are more willing to give birth.
