It is not that you cannot switch — it is that you dare not
Second sources win on price and lead time. What stops buyers and hardware engineers is never willingness, it is accountability after the swap.
- Datasheets look close until you comparePackage and pinout match, but nobody hands you an item-by-item comparison of clock tree, peripheral timing and drive strength.
- Nobody owns the software workRegister maps, libraries and flashing tools may differ — and there is no agreed standard for how much testing counts as passed.
- Substitution touches certificationOnce a certified part is replaced, whether retesting is needed and what evidence is required is rarely clear.
- No samples for small volumesThe plan looks good, but if you cannot get a handful of parts to test, the decision never leaves the meeting room.
- Suppliers sell parts, not validationsQuoting ends the conversation; parameter differences, lot consistency and continuity are not followed through.
Four substitution jobs we take on
EOL substitution
The original part is EOL or past its last-time-buy window — we find alternatives that can still supply.
Cost-down substitution
The original is still available, but a second source cuts the per-unit cost meaningfully.
Lead-time substitution
Lead time past 26 weeks — we hold the line with in-stock or short-lead alternatives.
Second-source backup
Single-source risk is high — we build a qualified, switchable second part and channel.
Common directions, and what to check before switching
The table below lists widely used substitution directions to gauge feasibility. Whether a specific part can be swapped is decided by the item-by-item comparison and bench validation.
| Original family | Common substitution direction | Package compatibility | Check before switching |
|---|---|---|---|
| STM32F103 / F407 | Domestic M3/M4 families (GD32F103 / F407 and similar) | Pin-compatible in most packages; confirm per package | Clock tree, Flash wait states, peripheral timing |
| STM32G0 / L0 | Domestic low-power entry families | Drop-in in the same package | Low-power mode current, wake-up timing |
| 8-bit MCU (ATmega / PIC) | Domestic 8-bit platforms | Varies by part number — confirm individually | Instruction set, flashing method, peripheral mapping |
| General-purpose op-amps | Domestic equivalents | Drop-in in the same package | Offset voltage, bandwidth, noise, drift |
| LDO / DC-DC | Domestic power management parts | Same package — verify pin definition | Dropout, quiescent current, loop stability |
| Interface & level shifters | Domestic pin-compatible parts | Confirm item by item | Data rate, ESD rating, power-up sequencing |
| NOR Flash / EEPROM | Domestic SPI-compatible parts | Pin-compatible on most SPI interfaces | Read timing, sector organisation, endurance |
The table gives directions, not verdicts. Whether a part can be swapped depends on its full suffix, the lot and the application conditions.
Five steps from “we dare not” to “validated, then switched”
- Step 1 · Agree the directionBased on the full suffix, package and application, we propose one to three viable directions with the trade-offs spelled out.
- Step 2 · Compare item by itemA side-by-side electrical parameter table with every difference called out — never a vague “essentially equivalent”.
- Step 3 · Free sample validationSamples shipped for bench testing, with validation notes for the parameters that matter most.
- Step 4 · Pilot runOnce validated, we supply a small batch first, confirming lot consistency and line yield before scaling.
- Step 5 · Volume switch and second sourceAfter the volume switch we keep a second qualified channel, so you do not create a new single-source risk.
Frequently asked questions
If the package and pinout match, can I just drop it in?
Not on package alone. Pin compatibility only solves soldering — clock tree, peripheral timing, drive strength and power-up sequencing still need an item-by-item check, which we supply with the proposal.
Will a substitute affect my product certification?
It depends on your certification type and scope. We flag the key parameter differences alongside the proposal so you can judge whether retesting or extra evidence is needed.
How do I get samples, and do they cost anything?
Samples are free once the direction is agreed, shipped with the parameter comparison table and notes on the differences that matter.
How do you keep lot consistency after switching?
We run a small pilot batch first, then supply to the agreed volume. For multi-lot deliveries we provide a lot comparison note and keep retained samples for reference.
Can I use you for selection only, without buying?
Yes. Substitution search and selection advice are free of charge — payment only starts once an order is placed, and this service is usually how a long-term relationship begins.
