The most expensive reaction to an EOL notice is to park it. Discontinued parts live on a clock: the longer you wait, the thinner the open-market stock, the wilder the pricing, and the more rushed the replacement validation. Here is a proven sequence — run it in order.
Step 1: Quantify the impact, do not just forward the email
Answer three questions first: which products or lines use this part, how many units you will need over the next 12–24 months, and when the Last Time Buy window closes. Those three answers give you the gap size and the timeline — the inputs for every decision that follows.
Step 2: Evaluate three routes in parallel
- Open-market stock: lock inventory against the gap in one or several buys. No design change needed; the risk is refurbished and remarked parts, so batch and source verification is mandatory.
- Pin-to-pin alternates: qualify a second source with compatible package, pinout and key parameters. No board revision needed; the risk is that “pin-compatible” never means “fully compatible” — compare parameter by parameter.
- Design change: the fallback when both routes fail. Longest and most expensive, but the cleanest answer for products with a long remaining life.
Step 3: Validate in the right order
The sequence is: datasheet comparison line by line → sample on board → re-test at operating limits → pilot build → volume switch. Time saved by skipping a step is repaid with interest in the field. Watch temperature behavior, drive capability and timing — the three families that “look identical” most often.
Step 4: Bank the results
Every EOL event should produce two assets: an alternate map (original → replacement → validation status) and an updated lifecycle inspection list. Next time, you start from candidates instead of zero.
