TSMC chipmaker VIS reportedly opened its first advanced chip manufacturing facility in Singapore on Monday and is already looking to build a second. Driven by the AI infrastructure boom, the capacity of the new plant has been “sold out” as soon as it is put into production. The fab, called VSMC, is a joint venture between VIS and European chipmaker NXP. The plant started trial production in June, and it took just 18 months from construction to trial production, much faster than the more than two years it would normally take to build a chip factory. VIS said that the yield of the first batch of chips reached at least 99%. The plant is scheduled to start volume production in early 2027. The plant will also help TSMC produce key “intermediate layers” for advanced chip packaging, serving as substrates for connecting different types of chips for leading AI chip manufacturers such as Nvidia, Google and Broadcom. TSMC is the largest shareholder of VIS, holding about 19%. (Finance Association)
